Body Psychotherapy New York

Therapy Methods & Approaches Used

Rubenfeld Synergy Method: Rubenfeld Synergy is a deep and powerful body-centered psychotherapy typically using talk and touch together. Imagine the difference between describing a delicious meal and actually eating that wonderful food! Rather than talking about your feelings, you actually feel them. In body-centered therapy, we work with all of ourselves. As you lie on the table, or sit in a chair, you bring awareness to your body, learning to notice its habitual holding patterns, and most importantly, learning to release that holding. Read more about this method here.

Internal Family Systems (IFS): We all have had experiences of feeling inwardly divided and at odds with ourselves. Internal Family Systems therapy helps tease out our various internal voices, or parts, while supporting a compassionate view of all of our parts, even those that may be locked in extreme or seemingly self-destructive behaviors. By listening to the positive intentions of our parts, and developing a loving connection between parts and Self, (that wise, calm, unwounded place we were all born with), true healing and behavior change is possible. (IFS is a model of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz).

Food and body image issues: I am a long-time student of best-selling author Geneen Roth (Women, Food, and God: A Transformational Path to Almost Everything), who combines mindful eating and body awareness with psychological and spiritual inquiry to help people overcome their painful relationship to their bodies and to food. I work with individuals and groups around the emotional issues underlying all eating disorders, with particular specialization in working with compulsive overeaters

Mindfulness Meditation: I teach breathing and meditation techniques as needed to help calm anxiety, stress, insomnia and focusing difficulties. Finding that quiet place within profoundly helps us deal with the stresses of our lives. Meditation also gives us a sense of our sacred connection to all beings, as well as promoting health and a profound sense of well-being.

Jungian-oriented Dream Work: After more than twenty years in Jungian analysis, I honor dreams as messengers from our deeper selves, and work with people to uncover the wisdom of the unconscious. Using active imagination, dream work involves uncovering the emotions and messages of our dreams by dialoguing with dream figures, journaling, and/or using artwork and movement.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT): Touching and/or tapping on specific acupuncture meridians can quickly free the energetic blockages that are often at the root of phobias, anxiety, depression and stress. EFT is a simple and elegant process of rapidly changing long-stuck issues.
